Juntos 2 College
Juntos 2 College exists to support undocumented families towards upward academic and economic mobility. I joined their team after they lost their lead designer in order to help finish an MVP of their mobile app in time for a scheduled presentation to pitch the project to investors.
Tools Used: Figma, Invision
Duration: 4 weeks, October 2020
Team: Lead UX Designer (me), Second UX Designer, Founder
Challenge
Manifest Juntos 2 College's founder's vision into a mobile app MVP with multiple constraints, including time, budget, and limited research.
Solution
Engage in a four-week sprint process to design and build a high-fidelity prototype aligned with the founder's initial design vision.
Process:
Onboarding - Hitting the ground running
My contract was for a total of 20 hours over the course of four weeks so I had to manage my time carefully and work very efficiently to accomplish this assignment. The previous lead designer hadn't left much documentation or a roadmap, so before jumping in I knew I needed to spend some time familiarizing myself with the content. After identifying work that could be used moving forward versus tasks that still needed to be completed, I created a timeline for my next four weeks.
• Work that was already completed: Personas, sketches, and a few screens of low-fidelity wireframes that needed to be updated
• Work to be done: Finish the low-fidelity wireframes, prototyping, recruitment & usability testing, iterations, branding, high-fidelity interactive prototype, and some key mock-ups to pique investor interest
Design
Inspired by sketches made by the founder, I designed a low-fidelity prototype to accomplish the three primary tasks of this MVP:
1) Creating a profile for a new user
2) Completing a career quiz
3) Viewing career quiz results
Testing indicates navigation is easy and intuitive
Our goal was to recruit five people from our target popular of Hispanic high school students for usability testing. Due to time constraints and technical issues, we were only able to successfully complete testing with one student.
This one participant was able to complete their tasks with a 100% error-free rate. Feedback they gave us was:

• “It was easy.”
• “I just followed the steps.”
• “It was easy to understand”
Getting ready to deliver the final MVP
Quick and easy branding
I facilitated a moodboard exercise with the primary stakeholder and used this to get inspiration for colors and typography that informed the creation of high-fidelity wireframes.

Reflections: What did I learn?
Meeting the challenges of a design sprint. Being on this project pushed me outside of my comfort zone and was a great learning experience working within so many constraints. It was gratifying to finish the sprint with a high-fidelity prototype that enabled my client to obtain additional investments to continue his project.
The motivation that comes with working a project that aligns with your values. For someone who is passionate about youth empowerment and equity, I enjoyed the opportunity to contribute to a product that will provide support, knowledge, and financial resources for undocumented high school seniors.
What my client had to say...
“I wanted to let you know that you are a contributor to Juntos 2 College making it this far. There were many days were I wanted to just give it all up... but your trust and the rest of our MVP team kept me in the game."
